UNDERSTAND
Fusion began by diving deep into understanding the macro system a provider is prescribing within: all the players required to get a prescription from a doctor's pen to a patient’s hand, the operational hurdles and their origins, where OptumRx currently exists within this process and where it has permission to add value.
EMPATHIZE
Our solution would only be as good as our empathy for those it impacts. Fusion pulled from its library of in-depth, holistic interviews with providers, patients, and administrators to create an accurate, not assumed, picture of the prescribing experience. The resulting user-generated insights allowed us to identify patterns, pain points, and possibilities.
OPPORTUNITY
We distilled a wealth of provider perspectives into actionable insights. Physicians seeing prior-authorization as producing slower and lower quality decisions became our guiding insight that set our compass for ideation. We brought together all organizational stakeholders, mapped out the complete physician experience, and identified moments of intervention that could address our resulting opportunity area: “How might the prior-authorization process accelerate better physician decision-making, not delay it?”
ALIGN
The concept of a real-time, personalized prescription platform that helps physicians easily identify which medications are covered and the patient-specific expected cost started to form. But how that concept would actually come to life required all parts of the business to come together to articulate a future vision. Each business and operational representative individually sketched out their envisioned holistic experience. We brought these different viewpoints together and filtered them through the lens of our physician insights. The result was a fully articulated concept that addressed both user needs and specific business and operational perspectives.
EXECUTE
Equipped with a product strategy grounded in physician stories, the development of PreCheck Myscript began. We worked with partner teams to transition the vision generated via the engagement to design and build stages. The resulting digital portal included features like patient-specific approval information available instantly, prescription fulfillment options (and their predicted cost to the patient) listed side by side, and suggestions for cheaper alternatives (such as a generic option) to guide cost reduction without forcing providers’ hands.
RESULTS
OptumRx’s PreCheck MyScript® was successfully launched and delivers real-time, personalized prescription information, allowing physicians to easily identify which medications are covered and the associated patient cost for each option. PreCheck MyScript® also makes suggestions for other clinically appropriate, lower-cost alternatives and streamlines the approval process for drugs requiring prior authorization, allowing the doctor to request approval directly through the application. It’s currently used by more than 2.25 million prescribers across the United States.
