IMAX (derived from “Maximum Image”) is a cutting-edge cinema technology that offers viewers an immersive and high-quality movie experience. It encompasses advanced camera systems, film formats, and projection technologies that set it apart from conventional cinema setups.

The IMAX Experience in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is set to join the IMAX revolution with the opening of its first IMAX theater at Havelock City Mall by Scope Cinemas. This venue boasts the largest cinema screen in the country, marking a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s entertainment industry. The inaugural IMAX screening is scheduled for July 26, featuring the highly anticipated “Deadpool and Wolverine” movie.

Key Components of IMAX Technology

1. Cameras and Filming

IMAX utilizes high-resolution cameras capable of capturing images with exceptional detail and clarity. These cameras typically use a frame size three times larger than conventional 35mm film. Some popular IMAX cameras include:

  • Arri Alexa LF
  • Arri Alexa Mini LF
  • Arri Alexa 65 (4K)
  • Sony Venice (6K)
  • Red Ranger Monstro (8K)
  • Panavision Millennium DXL2 (8K)

IMAX technology isn’t limited to just high-resolution cameras. It also involves special image enhancements and can even upgrade traditionally shot 35mm films to IMAX quality, as seen with “Apollo 13” and “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones.”

2. Projection Systems

IMAX theaters use two main types of projection systems:

  • Digital Projection: Used for screens with a 1.89:1 aspect ratio, employing two 2K projectors for 2D/3D projection.
  • Laser Projection: Supports both 1.43:1 and 1.89:1 aspect ratios, offering about 50% more light output than digital projection and supporting frame rates up to 60fps.

3. Sound Technology

IMAX places great emphasis on audio quality, considering it crucial to the overall cinematic experience. The IMAX sound system:

  • Removes unwanted noise for clearer audio output
  • Offers a wide dynamic range, capturing both very low and high frequencies
  • Can output sounds as low as 23Hz (compared to 40Hz in standard systems)
  • Amplifies sound through the theater walls while absorbing audience noise

4. Screen Technology

IMAX screens are significantly larger than standard cinema screens, with aspect ratios of 1.43:1 or 1.90:1. This larger, taller screen fills more of the viewer’s field of vision, contributing to a more immersive experience.

The Complete IMAX Experience

A true IMAX experience combines all these elements — high-resolution filming, advanced projection, superior sound, and large-format screens — to create an unparalleled cinematic environment. This technology allows viewers to appreciate the intricate details and expansive scenes in films, particularly benefiting genres like action, sci-fi, and nature documentaries.

As IMAX technology continues to evolve and expand globally, it promises to redefine the standards of cinema viewing, offering audiences a more engaging and memorable movie-watching experience.
