Welcome to Future Health, your weekly update on the impact of AI in Health, Sport and Life Sciences.

Reform has just put out a report, Making NHS data work for everyone, which is well worth a read.

The report states that the private sector is an important partner to the NHS and plays a crucial role in the development of healthcare technologies. However, the report argues that the NHS risks losing out on potential future revenue without a comprehensive national data strategy.

Also, check out the newly formed UK Health Data Research Alliance, which will look into the best ways to design, use, collect, manage and analyse health data in a responsible way for clinical trials, medical research, and innovation.

Wellness

This NYC startup brings a dietitian powered by AI to your phone
Lyle is the app that fills this gap through its AI-powered service that helps men reach their health and weight loss goals. Lyle’s proprietary technology simulates conversations with a real dietitian to introduce accountability as well as offer personalised meal plans based on the user’s goals and health needs. With a few clicks and integrations, the app enables users to conveniently order groceries for the week through third-party vendors like Shipt and Instacart to ensure they are hitting their dietary goals.

AlleyWatch sat down with Philip Kasumu about how his personal experience in the fitness and bodybuilding realm inspired him to create an app to promote health and wellness tailored to each man.

Future of Hospitals

Hospital beds get digital upgrade
A major manufacturer of hospital beds is seeking to transform the ubiquitous furniture into a source of medical data, the latest sign of hospitals’ digital transformation.

Hill-Rom Holdings said its newest hospital-bed model will include sensors to monitor patients’ heart and respiratory rates. The sensors will check a patient’s vital signs 100 times a minute and alert nurses when signs suggest the patient’s condition may worsen, said Hill-Rom Chief Executive John Groetelaars.

Oren Todoros, CEO of the branding firm CannaImpact, tells NoCamels that mixing cannabis culture with IoT (the internet of things) “has the potential to lift the industry to new heights.”

“Due to this rapid shift towards smart connected devices, growers and consumers are increasingly turning to IoT technologies, essentially comprising of sensor devices, artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics, to bring new efficiencies to the way we grow and consume cannabis,” says Todoros, whose firm works with Israeli startup Kassi Labs, which developed a smart storage hub solution for marijuana.

Innovation

ASU engineering students automate health care delivery
ASU alumni and students make up about two-thirds of employees at AdviNOW Medical, a Scottsdale-based medtech startup specializing in the self-guided medical stations popping up around the Valley.

As patients wait to see a health care professional, an augmented reality-based platform guides them to enter their vitals and record symptoms, then generates a diagnosis and treatment plan. When patients meet with their health care provider, either in person or through video consultation, the provider can easily verify the AI-collected information and confirm the patient’s diagnosis.
