Our Veterans Future Lab, located in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood, houses early-stage businesses led by military veterans and their spouses. Here’s a snapshot of some of the news from the inaugural cohort of Apex, our year-long business incubation program.

X38 STARTS ON A PROTOTYPE

Members of the company are spread across New York, California, Massachusetts, and Germany. The cofounders have been busy finalizing the software architecture for the company’s products and have begun building a prototype.

EMCEE INVEST: SHAPE THIS STARTUP’S FUTURE

Emcee is on a mission to spread wealth and financial progress, and is building a platform for the next generation of investors to invest together as well as learn from each other. The company is also improving the way personal data is collected, handled, and used for investment managers. Help the startup by taking its GDPR in Finance Survey as it works to finally bring discovery and personalization to the investment management industry.

Emcee would also love to get feedback from investors. Any investors out there own a Robinhood or other brokerage account? Or have opinions on stocks or crypto? You can join Emcee’s private pilot program to help shape the company’s future and to put your skills to the test. Sign up at Emcee and drop the company a line that says “beta” to participate.

STORM KING ANALYTICS: THE ART AND SCIENCE OF DATA INGESTION

Storm King Analytics evolved out of the company’s initial efforts to support the Network Science Center at West Point. Two of its early projects included developing a key leader engagement strategy for the U.S. Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa in Djibouti and then mapping local startup ecosystems in African economic capitals to develop algorithmically generated policy recommendations to strengthen such ecosystems.

While there, Storm King met numerous investors and business people who were also interested in acquiring a better understanding of the local ecosystem to succeed in the local high-risk, high-reward environment.

The team discussed how it could support such efforts to leverage network-based approaches from the world’s leading counterterrorism organizations. The end result fuses the science of machine intelligence with the art of trusted agent networks, leading to intelligence that’s more accurate, immediately available, and at a much lower cost than currently available.

As the company completed its first engagement with a commercial client, it realized that the process was both repeatable and scalable, birthing the Storm King’s business intelligence platform for emerging markets: Vumbua, Swahili for “discover.”

Storm King recently finished the initial prototype for the platform and has begun demo-ing it to potential clients as part of the company’s customer discovery process.

Next up: Expanding its fusion of science and art to build an innovative data ingestion tool that’ll allow clients to see analysis of real-time data at their desks.

LIFT AND SHIFT FOUNDATION: AN APPROVAL, AN OVERHAUL

Lift and Shift Foundation works to build confidence in wounded service members by providing access to hands-on activities in the fields of science, technology, and engineering. And things have been moving quickly at this non-profit. Over the past few weeks, Lift and Shift has been undergoing a well-organized organizational overhaul in order to expand. Team and organizational management processes are being refined through the support of a project by NYPACE (New York Professional Advisors for Community Entrepreneurs), and the Arduino pilot program launched in January is being bolstered by back-end development thanks to newly available support as a result of an 501c3 approval.

Interested in learning more about the organisation and how you can get involved? Head over to Industry City on August 18.
