In recent years, the Maine State Senate has swung with the national winds. Today, there is a Republican majority — and the brand of politics embodied by Governor Paul LePage too often carries the day. That’s why we are all in on flipping the Maine Senate.Electing a new governing majority in the Maine Senate will be a fitting conclusion to the LePage era and create a new base of power to ensure more Mainers get quality jobs, decent education and environmental protections to protect kids’ health. Any way you slice it, Mainers need better than what today’s Senate dishes up:

  • Refusing to expand voting access in Maine, including blocking automatic voter registration, which was passed by the House and supported by the Secretary of State.
  • Repeatedly putting up roadblocks to Mainers’ path to affordable higher education, including blocking initiatives to expand eligibility for in-state tuition and student loan forgiveness.
  • Slow-walking efforts to strengthen water testing in schools and daycares, even though Maine has one of the worst records in the country when it comes to protecting children from lead poisoning.
  • Working to reverse wage increases enacted by a majority of Mainers via a 2016 ballot initiative.
  • Denying thousands of Maine workers access to paid sick leave.

It doesn’t have to be this way. In fact, across the capitol, the Maine House has been working for political, social and economic openness as the path toward renewed prosperity in the state. But the regressive Senate wants to limit opportunity for Mainers, both economic and political.

Right now, Maine is a tale of two chambers. With your help and our work, we can turn it into a unified story about a better Maine and a better future.
