How to hack FoB to win at least £2,000 cash

Future of Blockchain Competition
4 min readNov 19, 2018

We designed FoB with a core ambition in mind: to see a real-world use case come out of the competition.

We think that a prime source of great projects are those currently studying at great universities (we explain more in this piece). Therefore we designed an incentive structure to compel talented people to enter our competition.

Two ways to enter

A. Build your own idea [“Creators”] 🔧

B. Answer a pre-set challenge. [“Challengers”] 💪

For Creators:

Build whatever you want and enter it into the competition.

Top tips for hacking:

  • Enter a startup you’re already working on that hasn’t received funding
  • Enter a research paper
  • Enter a project you’re working on as part of your degree

For Challengers:

The proposition is simple:

Build something great using one of the leading platforms in the space and win £2,000 cash. There are up to three £2,000 cash prizes per platform. What’s more, there is a top prize of £20k.

The platforms:

Gnosis

Kyber

Liquidity Network

MakerDao

Nucypher

Santiment

ThunderCore

Zilliqa

Dividing the challenges

Remember, for each platform there are up to 3 x £2,000 cash prizes. Each platform has provided an overview, some ideas and documentation. Read more here and on www.futureofblockchain.co.uk.

We’ve divided all the things you can do as part of the challenges into two sections

Technical Challenges — perfect for intensive coding over a weekend or two

  • Implement a command-line client to interact with Gnosis Safe
  • Design an end-end participation solution for Gnosis DutchX
  • Store seed node metadata for network bootstrapping in a decentralized way using Nucypher
  • Design a Metamask-like browser extension for managing permissions through Nucypher
  • Make a compiler from Scilla to WASM for Zilliqa

Design Challenges — perfect for those with front-end developer expertise

  • Implement a frontend for Gnosis Safe
  • Build a GUI interface for the NuCypher network
  • Build a GUI interface for the Nucypher that’s portable and easy to distribute

Building Applications — perfect for longer time frame building an iterating

  • Using Kyber, develop any type of application that incorporates on-chain token swaps
  • Design an e-commerce platform integration using Liquidity Network
  • Build a streaming service using Liquidity Network
  • Utilise Nucypher for a decentralised Dropbox or encrypted Slack
  • Build a game on ThunderCore
  • Build any dApp on Thunder
  • Build P2P payments on Zilliqa
  • Build a marketplace for selling real-world items on Zilliqa
  • Build a Quora/Reddit like platform with rewards that could be traded for cryptocurrencies.
  • Build a prediction market use case on Gnosis

Non-Technical challenges — perfect for non-developers

  • Design a physical commerce use-case for micropayments using Liquidity Network
  • Build and test an Investment Strategy of over 1000 words on Santiment’s platform
  • Build tools for exposing fraud and improving transparency of the crypto markets

How much effort do I have to put in?

It depends what challenging you are entering. For some of the technical challenges, you could spend an intensive weekend working on an answer. For other ones that involve building a fully operational dapp, you might want to spend a few weeks on the competition.

It also depends on the size of your team. If you are a single person, the workload is going to be much harder than if you have 3 or 4 people. If you don’t have teammates, don’t worry — we can connect you with others at a co-founder speed dating session.

Can I enter multiple challenges?

Yes! And you could therefore win more prizes!

Top tips for winning a prize

  • If you have a general idea for an application using blockchain, why not build it on one of the smart contract platforms taking part in the competition such as Thunder or Zilliqa
  • Read the documentation of each project before committing to a challenge!
  • Attend the Launch Events to hear directly from the 8 challenge partners! Cambridge is Weds 21st Nov, Oxford is Thurs 22nd Nov and London is Fri 23rd Nov.
  • Enter more than one challenge.

Do I own the IP of what I build?

Yes.

How long do I have to build?

Applications open on Monday 19th November 2018 and close on Sunday 9th December 2018. You’ll be told if you have been accepted into the competition by Sunday 16th December 2018. You’ll have from the time you’ve been accepted into the competition until Sunday 10th March 2019 to build something!
