Future of Blockchain Competition
4 min readOct 19, 2019

Future of Blockchain is a 3-month competition for developers in university cities. During the competition, participants can either build a startup or answer a technical challenge. They are rewarded with numerous prizes, both monetary and non-monetary. It is open to anyone who studies/studied or currently lives in the cities of Oxford, Cambridge, London or Berlin.

How it works

Participants can enter (by 1st November) in teams of 1–6. You can either participate by:

  • General Challenge: Building or entering a startup/project of your own design
  • Partner Challenges: Answering a technical challenge

Participants have 3 months (November to mid-February) to complete their project. You must register by 1st November 2019 and submit your project digitally by 15th March 2020.

Timeline

  • October 2019: Registration Period
  • w/c 21st October 2019: Launch Events
  • 1st Nov 2019 to 15th March 2020: Build Period
  • 15th March 2020: Submission Date
  • Mon 27th April 2020: Demo Day

Prizes

Open to every participant, there is an overall prize of £10k cash.

For each Partner Challenge (not including the General Challenge), there are set prizes.

About

Tezos is a decentralized computing platform with a proof of stake consensus, formal verification and the ability to let stakeholders vote on changes to the protocol.

Challenges

  • 1. Build DApps on Tezos.
  • 2. Build tools for Tezos.
  • 3. Make evolve Tezos.

1st Challenge

Short Description

Build a DApp on Tezos on a subject of your choice. A non-limited list of suggestions: Finance, Supply Chain, Public Administration,…
Building a framework for DApps is accepted too.

Longer Description

Build a Tezos decentralised application (or DApp), i.e. an application
interacting with the Tezos blockchain via RPC calls and smart
contracts.

You are free to chose the topic of your DApp, be it in
Finance (tokenisation, STOs, …), Supply Chain (traceability,
authentication,…), Government / Society (private voting, personal data,…), Tezos’
governance mechanism or another topic of your choice.

Building a framework for DApps is also accepted if working on a single DApp feels too easy :)

We’re keen on rewarding projects that are both user-friendly and safe (using Formal Methods is definitely a plus!)

2nd Challenge

Short Description

Build tools for Tezos. You can either contribute to existing open
source tooling projects (block explorers, libraries to interact with a
node, etc cf. tezos.help, developers.tezos.com) or start from scratch.

Longer Description

We invite you, in this challenge, to contribute to the Tezos ecosystem.

Some ideas of tools:
- a graphical client for the Tezos node,
- analytics solution of the chain (fees, history of block producing rights, …)
- analytics of the peer-to-peer network
- IDEs / text editor plugin for Michelson or another smart contract language for Tezos.

You can also choose to significantly contribute to an already existing project.

3rd Challenge

Short Description

Contribute to one of the parts of the Tezos codebase: its peer-to-peer or storage layers, its consensus algorithm, smart-contract language or voting rules. Full reimplementations are encouraged :)

Long Description

Via on-chain voting, Tezos code can evolve and remain state-of-the-art.

Tezos codebase is modular: it is divided into the shell (network and storage layer) and the economic ruleset or protocol (consensus algorithm, smart-contract language, voting rules, etc.)

Some possible contributions/implementations:
- A formally verified economic ruleset, a full one or parts of it.
- A Zero-Knowledge scheme integrated to the Tezos codebase.
- Optimisations on the storage or network layer.
- A (possibly) certified consensus algorithm.
- A (possibly) certified gossip protocol (with e.g. TLA+).
- Or some significant contribution of your choice…

Prizes

Here are our guiding principles for rewarding participants:

Prize pool of 20000 XTZ per challenge!

If everything goes as we hope, there will be many exciting projects in every challenge, and we will gladly give all the 3 x 20,000 XTZ tokens. We will not be shy about rewarding good work.

Registration

Registration is now open, please do so via www.futureofblockchain.co.uk. You can register for the competition anytime before the submission deadline (15th March).

Monday 21st October: Berlin

Tuesday 22nd October: Oxford

Wednesday 23rd October: Cambridge

Thursday 24th October: London
