SUMMARY OF: II -Mighty Works and Wonders, Chap14 -Jubilation, section 47

“STAR OF EPIPHANY” — by Omar Fink 2019

[this is a series of summaries extracted from the novel]

Lee Martin is talking about how HU leadership was concerned about only being able to evacuate 3–4 billion people out of 8 billion before the comet’s return. Then Professor Morgan invented the Directed Matter Junction (DMJ), which can create “diamond nanothreads.” These nanothreads are stronger than carbon nanotubes, allowing for improved space elevator capacity. With this technology, all of Earth’s population who want to leave can be evacuated. Diamond nanothreads are also being used in new under-skin garments, exoskeletons, and space-suits.

Nabith Mehra gives a presentation that explains how the comet train’s passage through the asteroid belt caused changes in asteroid trajectories. He proposes a plan to save Earth by altering the trajectories of 14 large asteroids (over 100km in diameter). These asteroids, when positioned correctly, could create enough gravitational force to deflect the returning comet train. The plan relies on the resources and capabilities developed during the evacuation process. While they can’t guarantee 100% success, calculations show a high probability of deflecting most comet fragments.

Delize Naidu outlines a six-month timeline for implementing the asteroid deflection plan. The RRRT has been recruiting top pilots and acquiring necessary spacecraft. A network of sensors with computational abilities is being deployed to collect data and calculate trajectories in real-time. HAB-58 will serve as the central information hub, but the project will be highly distributed due to time delay issues. She emphasizes the need for continued focus and resources, despite the new evacuation capabilities provided by diamond thread technology. She expresses concern about complacency and slipping timelines now that full evacuation seems possible.
