The beauty of Broken Beach

Third day was the most amazing day in Bali because we will took a boat to cross to “Nusa Penida” island where it’s just hype for couple years ago. There were 4 beautiful spots that you guys can explore.

We didn’t plan to stay overnight, only for roundtrip day. We walked out from Griya Inn to Sanur Beach around 7 AM. When we touched down in Sanur Beach we were surprised by the crowd of the people and we started worry about our schedule.

There were so many travel agencies that provide tour package, you can buy boat ticket only / tour package. We plan to cross to Nusa Penida at 8 AM but unfortunately all tickets already sold for that time, they only available for 11 AM onwards, but it didn’t match with our schedule trip. After going from one boat vendor to the other, we finally we got one way tickets 100k IDR/person for 10 AM departure and we try our luck to buy return ticket from Nusa Penida.

Tips for you: Better book in advance especially when it’s a long weekend / holiday. Or you have to come very early in the morning to buy a ticket.

Caspla boat: trip to Nusa Penida

After 1 hour waiting, finally our boat came. The trip took around 40–50 minutes depending on the weather. We tried to close our eyes and took power nap but still can’t because it was so bumpy. Time flew by so fast, without even noticing, we have arrived at “Caspla Beach View”, one of the resort in Nusa Penida.

Caspla Beach View

Finally, we arrived in Nusa Penida around 11 AM, an adventure start to begin. Why? Because we didn’t have any itinerary here, no transportation, etc. First thing first we looked for a transportation, local driver include local guide. After a few minutes a local guy who worked in that resort came to us and asked “where did you want to go?” I said we don’t know, we looked for local tour here and transportation. And the guy offered us as a local tour and driver with a price 500k IDR. We asked how many places for 500k? He said only 1 place (Broken beach / Crystal Beach). We were shocked, then he asked are we going to stay in the island and we said no. He suggest us to stay of for 1 night, because it was already noon, and the places were far way kilometers and the road was not smooth. The last return boat is 5 PM, its impossible to catch it if we go to 2 places. After a few minutes negotiation, we agreed for 2 places (Broken Beach & Crystal Bay), car transportation (Suzuki APV) for 600k.

Tips for you: If this is your first time, you better rent a car because the road is not smooth / rocky. But if you like more adventure, you can rent a motorbike but you have to choose motorbike really carefully, make sure the brakes, suspension, wheel are in good working condition.

Along the way, while we were in car, we thought that just going 2 places were not enough. We had an option to stay 1 night, but if we stay we need to rearrange our next day schedule trip. Because the next day we are going to rafting and we already booked. So my gf called her friend to move rafting day to another day. While we waited the confirmation, we negotiated the cost with the driver. Surprisingly he gave us a reasonable price (700k IDR for 1 whole day driving plus drive back to the dock on the next day and 75k /person for return ticket) and he also knows a good place to stay. Short story we had confirmation can move to another day and we decide to stay in Nusa Penida. We can enjoy Nusa Penida without having worry about the time.

Tips for you: In Nusa Penida there is no mobile phone signal for XL, Telkomsel just one bar almost none, but signal for Smart fren is good. So you just count on local wifi in restaurant / hotel.

So we started our adventure. First place was the furthest destination which was Broken Beach.

Romance on the cliff

After 1 hour driving, we arrived and go to first spot and sat down by the cliff to enjoy the wave sound.

Cliff near Broken Beach

There was a tragedy where a tourist stood near the cliff edge and suddenly the big wave swept him but luckily he only fell down to the ground and sustained minor injuries. Local guide already told us to stay away from certain spot that was very dangerous.

The wave and cliff were much higher than this picture

We continue walking through the terrain to Angel Billabong and the iconic of Broken Beach.

Unfortunately we can’t go down to the place where people usually take more photos because there was a tragedy, a Japanese tourist passed away while she swam suddenly a big wave swap her away.

Icon of Broken Beach

Around 2 hours we explored Broken Beach, we went back to our car and continue to Kelingking Beach. Along the way we found some motorbikes that were left behind by the side of the road because it were broken so the tourist have to walk, but we don’t know where they should go to find another transportation. In the middle we stop by a small restaurant (i think that the only restaurant near Broken Beach).

After 20 minutes driving, we arrived in Kelingking Beach. The iconic of Kelingking Beach is an island that looks like head of T-Rex. You can walk down to the beach but the path is not easy and super long through a small steps, but it’s worth to try. Unfortunately, we didn’t go down because we already run out of energy.

T-Rex

It was almost 5 PM and still have 1 more place we want to explore. So we only spent 1 hour in Kelingking Beach and continue our drive to Crystal Bay. By the time we got there it almost dark so we only took a few pictures. Actually if you came here in time you can enjoy the sunset.

Not full sunset in Crystal Bay

At the end of the day we got a very good deal for homestay because our driver knows the owner personally. It was only 350k/night. For your reference, if your are planning to stay overnight, you can search “Cemara’s Beach Home Stay”.

After we checked-in, we took a quick dinner and prepare to sleep earlier, as the next day we need to wake up very early to catch up a return boat to Sanur Beach..

Overall We really enjoyed the trip in Nusa Penida very much and will come back again another time to explore the west side of the island, Atuh Beach.
