I Miss My Bed

Traveling is all fun and games until you fail to get a good night’s sleep.

Not all Airbnb’s are created equal. My biggest beef is the variation in bed quality.

Airbnb has a lot going for them, but what they lack is consistency in quality. It’s what hotels have down pat.

And when it comes to beds, it’s where the Westin has made a name for itself. Ask any frequent traveler and they will tell you about the Heavenly bed found only at Westin hotels. Not everyone is a fan, but those that are. Well, they are super fans. You can even buy the bed for your home. Imagine that, a sleep set up on the road that’s so comfortable, you actually miss it when you get home. And you miss it enough to purchase it from the hotel. That’s good marketing.

I’ve slept in 3 different beds over the past 10 weeks and only one produced a sense of “ahh” reaction upon laying down.

3 Airbnb rentals, 1 good mattress. Those are not the best odds. For me, it’s meant several minutes spent tossing and turning. Equally as many lost in productivity the next day.

What if Airbnb could classify rental properties according to the mattress brand and quality in the unit? In order to do so Airbnb could contract with a mattress brand and offer hosts an opportunity to purchase new beds at a special rate. For any host with this bed they could be given special designation as units with “THE bed”. In the same way that hosts are given a “super host” status, this new marker would be for the guest’s comfort and peace of mind. “Book here and we guarantee a good night’s sleep”.

I imagine a brand with similar sensibility, culture, and entrepreneurial spirit as a partner. Someone like Casper. Take it a step further and get pillow options, bedding delivery, and peace of mind for discerning travelers not wanting to gamble on their next night’s sleep.

I want to be able to search for my next Airbnb based on the mattress, pillow, and bedding type and quality. Please let me filter that way in the future, Airbnb!

Sleep is important, this we know. Mattress, pillow, and bedding selection are the building blocks to a good night’s sleep. Let’s make it easier for Airbnb hosts and guests to guarantee the stage is set for your best night’s sleep yet.

For any frequent Airbnb travelers, does this resonate? How about the Airbnb hosts out there. Would you consider doing this? Purchasing beds, pillows, and bedding directly from Airbnb if they had a partner contracted at a special rate?

Given I’ll be living out of Airbnb’s for the foreseeable future. This kinda stuff matters to me, and I suspect others too.

For now, I’m sleepy and so must find coffee…
