This weekend’s getaway took me down the coast of California to San Luis Obispo and Avila Beach. We packed up the car and headed down the 101 Freeway to celebrate one of my closest friends birthday.

When we arrived Friday morning we dropped off our bags and headed straight to the beach. It has been very cloudy up in the San Francisco Bay Area, so we were all craving some sunlight. Just around 15 minutes from SLO lay the little beach cove Avila.

We set down our blankets and towels, applied our sunscreen and just relaxed. All of our lives are so busy right now that it is rare that we are all together, doing absolutely nothing and loving it!

Despite the chills it gave us, we did dive into the water — we all agreed it felt like an ice bath. I’m not positive if we went under the waves on purpose or if were talking too much and got knocked over, but we eventually submerged every inch of our bodies into the cold water. Even though this wasn’t our plan, it did help us get used to the water and enjoy being in it!

Saturday morning we hiked Bishop Peak trail, a 3.5 round trip. The view from the top was breathtaking! A full view of downtown San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly, Laguna Lake and the Santa Lucia Mountains is available for the hiker who makes it to the top of this rocky path. Dusty and rocky but so worth it!

Later in the weekend we explored the cute town of San Luis Obispo which Oprah Winfrey deemed the happiest town in America. I can confirm, Oprah was right!

The beautiful scenery and all the little shops made this town the perfect weekend getaway.
