Samsung’s response and a photo of the protective layer mentioned by Samsung
Photo from The Verge — Taken by Dieter Bohn

Samsung Galaxy Folds are breaking after 2 days of use and breaking all of our hearts.

It has been reported by several news agencies that the Samsung galaxy fold is breaking after just 2 days of use. It was reported first on CNBC when a reviewer named Todd Haselton had his Samsung Galaxy Fold just break. The issue seems to lie in the hinge hardware and it is damaging the screens as you can see in the pictures above acording to Haselton. Samsung has responded by pointing out that their is a warning that states, “The main screen includes a special protective layer. Peeling off the protection layer or using any adhesives on the main screen, such as screen protectors or stickers, may cause damage.”

That doesn’t explain what happened in the photo right above us. In this photo as Dieter Bohn from the Verge explains it is a totally different situaion. In this review phone that was given to Dieter by Samsung a small fragment got stuck in the gap and lodged between the screen and the hinge. Somehow the fragment worked it’s way up the hinge and damaged the screen. This suggest that their is more than just one issue that is causing these phones to break.

My concern isn’t just that these phones are having issues. My main concern is Samsung’s response is that a plastic layer is the only thing keeping a $2,000 device in good working order. That is very deflating to think that this technological marvel is being held together by a thin layer of special plastic.

The phones are currently only in pre-order and so far haven’t hasn’t released to customers. According to bestbuy.com the phone’s release date is still April 26th. Samsung hasn’t faced a disaster like this since the Note 7 as referenced in wikipedia — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_Note_7 Samsung will be looking to save face in the upcoming days. Hopefully Samsung can remedy this but right now it isn’t looking good.
