An Anime Movie Adaptation for Jujutsu Kaisen?

As the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen comes to an end, rumours of an anime film adaptation have surfaced following the appearance of a mysterious website.

Every good thing comes to an end: Jujutsu Kaisen’s final episode will air this Friday. The anime adaptation of Gege Akutami’s manga, which was eagerly anticipated by many fans, did not disappoint. Beyond the numerous sakugas that the staff of MAPPA studio has produced, it is important to point how well they have successfully mastered the rhythm of the series. Each episode seemed to have its own distinct quality that made us eagerly anticipate the next.

Jujutsu Kaisen will undoubtedly be renewed for a second season, owing to the popularity of the anime. Two important questions, however, remain unanswered: When will the second season be available? Is Mappa still planning to support the project?

In response to the first question, the second season will most likely premiere in 2022. Because of the popularity of Jujutsu Kaisen and other MAPPA-managed anime like Attack on Titan and the upcoming anime adaptation Chainsaw Man, MAPPA can take its time with its schedule. Apart from a scheduling problem, MAPPA is unlikely to withdraw from the project in the second case.

So, are we going to be without anything remotely related to Jujutsu Keisen for several months? Maybe not, or at least that’s what Twitter is speculating.

“A domain for Jujutsu Kaisen Movie has recently been registered,” according to @JujutsuKaisen, an unofficial Twitter account devoted to Gege Akutami’s manga. There has been no official confirmation, and if you click on the link provided in the tweet, you will be taken to a blank page.

Obviously, the lack of information hasn’t stopped fans from speculating about the plot. As a result, many people believe that this film will be based on Jujutsu Kaisen volume 0 and will star Yuta Okkotsu. To be honest, I tend to agree with this theory. Unlike Naruto or One Piece, I have the odd impression that a movie has no place in the current plot of Jujutsu Kaisen. One of Jujutsu Kaisen’s strengths is its ability to get right to the point. If a character must die, he or she must do so promptly. A film with an original narrative, even though it isn’t canon, will most likely slow down the pace. Furthermore, with characters like Gojo and Sukuna, it’s nearly impossible to come up with a credible antagonist who can stand up to them… How do you explain how such a powerful adversary has slipped past the Jujutsu world’s notice all this time?

At the moment, all we can do is wait for a piece of information to emerge. But whether it is a movie or an OVA, you can be sure you’ll be able to Gojo again.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s synopsis:

Idly indulging in baseless paranormal activities with the Occult Club, high schooler Yuuji Itadori spends his days at either the clubroom or the hospital, where he visits his bedridden grandfather. However, this leisurely lifestyle soon takes a turn for the strange when he unknowingly encounters a cursed item. Triggering a chain of supernatural occurrences, Yuuji finds himself suddenly thrust into the world of Curses — dreadful beings formed from human malice and negativity — after swallowing the said item, revealed to be a finger belonging to the demon Sukuna Ryoumen, the “King of Curses.”

Yuuji experiences first-hand the threat these Curses pose to society as he discovers his own newfound powers. Introduced to the Tokyo Metropolitan Jujutsu Technical High School, he begins to walk down a path from which he cannot return — the path of a Jujutsu sorcerer.
