After what was incredible Night Summit execution of 18 events in 4 days, here are few cultural explorations of what I came across post Web Summit, during my recharging time.

  1. Music: Moullinex

It was unreal to have Moullinex play at Night Summit LX Warehouse party this year in Lisbon. His style is electric, modern and he gets everybody dancing. Portuguese homegrown talent.

2. Series: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

After stressful and somewhat busy times, I like to retrieve to quiet privacy of my own sofa and watch some shows that make me forget about the world and also make me feel good. I came across “unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” on Netflix. Nobody recommended this to me, so I was even more surprised that it just popped up. One of the writers and producers is no other but Tina Fey! When I realised that in Season 1, Episode 3, there was not turning back. I watched all four seasons in just 1.5 weeks. What did it for me was the characters, the writing, moral stories and Titus Andromedon doing Beyonce’s song remix:

3. Super bock in Stock — Michael Kiwanuka

The last time I saw Kiwanuka was back in 2013 Love Supreme Festival in Britain. My good friend Esther Rodriguez introduced me to Michael Kiwanuka as her friend was playing bass in the band at the time and we got chatting with Kiwanuka backstage about his vision for his career. Fast forward 7 years and Kiwanuka arrived to Lisbon as part of Superbock in Stock festival.

4. Creative Agency — The Department

When I came across The Department, Creative Agency from London — I stopped and said WOW. I’ve met their Creative Director back in the day when Hamish was looking after The Vaults in Waterloo. We were producing The Battle of Algiers Secret Cinema experience and Hamish invited Kevin Spacey to see the show. It was exciting.

I was not surprised about the level and execution of excellence after I learned that The Department is being led by Hamish. He is a visionary and a strong character with a futuristic vision. It was exciting to explore their website and their previous projects, including the one with Lewis Hamilton (also Production Design was completed by the Brilliant Ollie Tiong)

5. Web Summit — Edward Snowden

Each year, I’m reminded just how big Web Summit is, even if I work there 12 months a year :) We were all so very excited after the announcement that Edward Snowden will be speaking. It’s a huge accomplishment by our colleague Dena.

6. Stage Design — Talk by Es Devlin

I’d like to finish this month’s recommendations, with a TED talk by my favourite Stage Designer — Es Devlin. I have been following her work for the past 8 years and she always is so very impressive. This talk includes her process and her approach for creating stage design, her visual language. A delightful insight.

“It starts with a sketch. Then it evolves into a larger-than-life visual masterpiece, a celebration of human connection.”

“As directors and designers, we need to take a responsibility for every minute that audience spend with us. We are like pilots, navigating a flight path.” — Es Devlin.
