A Fitting Punishment?

The problem with the black-card — Part 3 of 3

I’m not convinced that the punishment fits the crime with black cards. We’ve seen players happily take a black card late in games in the knowledge someone will come on to replace them.

We have seen players’ games come to an end 5 or 10 minutes into a game for committing what is a minor offence in the grand scheme of things.

Seeing as the black card was primarily introduced to cut down on cynical fouling late on in games, you would have to wonder what’s the point of it in it’s current format!

Would a sin-bin not be a more fitting punishment? —

Surely a sin-binning would penalise teams who continue to cynically foul late in the game more so than an enforced substitution would? Having less players on the field will leave you more open to attacks from the opposition. And it also wouldn’t end the game of a player who receives a black card very early in proceedings.

Would you agree? I for one hope to see the black card become a sin-binning sooner rather than later.
