When I think of music in my family I think instinctually of my brothers and my dad.

My dad is sweet ole 60 year old man and is one of my favorite people on this earth. He is an orthopedic surgeon who loves the outdoors and a nice cup of coffee. Ever since I was little I remember riding in the car with him on the way to watch him go make rounds and talk to his patients at the hospital and what we listended to on the way there and back was smooth jazz. As I got older and time began to separate us, we made an effort to go on coffee dates together every month or so. There was a starbucks about 5 minues from our house and we still continued to listen to that smooth jazz music on that same ole radio station. I think that this style of music fits my dad’s personality becasue it is calming, kind, and easy to listen to. I love listening to my dad tell me stories about growing up in LA in a big family and the culture he grew up on. When I began running cross country im highschoo he came to everyone one of my meets and jumped from place to place in order to tell me my times and continuouslty encourage me. The sound of his voice is like that smooth jazz music. It never gets old and it always makes me feel calm and warm inside.

When I was in 7th grade my oldest brother got his licence and new (used 1997 Honda Civic car that could only play the radio and cascet tapes. We like to call it “the go-cart”. Ethan drove Noah and I to school a quarter of the way around I-285 every day and every evening. The music that we listened to is was remaines of most of my memories in the car with them. Ethan is a studious intellectual who loved classic pieces of music. He had may cascet tapes but there were two specifc tapes that were his favorite. First was his classical music tape. As an 11 year old girl in middle school I thought that listening to classical musci was so bizarre. When my friends road in the car with me, I recall being embarrassed at Ethan’s selection of music. I didn’t know how to appreciate the elegant elements of classical music at such a young age, but I can now thank him for introducing it to me and culturing me at the age of 11. His second favorite tape was Michael Jackson. We listened to it so much that the tape actully doesn’t even work properly anymore. Now whenever I hear a Michael Jackson song I think instantly of my two big brothers and the days when we rode around in that tiny go cart together and let the wind blow on our faces. We were so young and I am very found of those memories with my brothers. It saddens me that I rarely get to see them as we are older and separated by state lines, but I have music to thank for the wonderful memories that we did create when we were together.
