Who Am I?
Thanks for visiting my site! My name is Gabi Remz, and I am a second-year Master of Public Policy student at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy. There, I spend most of my time on economics and statistics, with a heavy dose of statistical programming (mostly in R). Within the politics and policy world, I am especially interested in elections and campaigns, the Middle East, and transportation. Outside of it, I love the NBA, national parks, and any type of entertainment in the mold of Anthony Bourdain (think a travel-cooking-politics hybrid).
Before Harris, I worked for a large network of charter schools in New York City and at POLITICO in Washington, D.C. I earned my undergraduate degree at Northwestern University, where I majored in journalism and political science. I am originally from Boston, and have also lived in Ireland and Israel.
If you ever find what I write interesting, please shoot me an email. I’d love to discuss it with you.
Why Am I on Medium?
I love to write, especially about things I love. I’ve been around journalists a long time, and have done my fair share of ghostwriting, but rarely have I published under my own name. So, this is a chance for me to get some of my work out on the internet. On this website, you can expect a few different kinds of posts:
- Analysis: Sometimes, I’ll share my perspective on something happening in the world, framing it largely through what the data shows. This could be anything from recapping a presidential debate to discussing a new bill in Illinois to lamenting the closing of a beloved restaurant (likely in Chicago or New York City).
- Reflections: Occasionally, I may post on more personal matters, like marriage, mental and physical health, and religion. There have been countless occasions when I have been lifted up by others’ bravery in their writing, and if I can do that even once, I will consider this whole thing a success.
- Shares and Responses: I love sharing longform journalism, shortform documentaries, data visualizations, and restaurant recommendations. I may also add in on my own take on the issue in question, or offer a different perspective.
That’s it! Thanks for reading.
