Ice Lake is the Future

Intel’s Ice Lake Intel is a big leap in CPU design. It’s created using a new 10nm process (more energy efficient) and includes new instructions (future proof) and significant increase in graphics performance (better casual gaming).

For the machine learning professionals it’s interesting to note that Ice Lake adds some more instructions to speed up machine learning. This way Intel is trying to stay in the ML game which the GPUs of nVidia are winning at the moment.

Shiny Ice Lake

10th generation ≠ 10th generation

Intel is selling its Comet Lake CPUs as also 10th generation, which if of course malarkey. It’s produced using the now surpassed 14nm process and doesn’t include the big leap in graphics performance and other features Ice Lake has. If you’re buying a new laptop to last you more than 4 years, buy an Ice Lake processor.

Rumours have it Intel has trouble getting enough Ice Lake CPUs to the laptop makers, so actual laptops with an Ice Lake that you can actually buy today are pretty rare still. I’ll keep you informed of new models as they come to market.
