If Apple products are notorious for anything it’s their price tag. But a high price doesn’t always mean expensive. If the phone lasts a long time and the reselling value is high the actual cost might be more manageable than the price tag appears to be.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 plus

Evolution?

The iPhone 8 to many will seem like a minor upgrade to the iPhone 7 (or even 6) since the form factor is identical. It ranks similar on many fronts to it’s predecessors but there are some key differences that make the iPhone 8 a great buy even if you currently own a 6S or 7. I’ll list the biggest features that might not make it a spectacular upgrade but does make the 8 a better investment than its predecessors.

Wireless charging means longer battery life (1)

The lithium-ion battery in the iPhone benefits from regular charging. Taking it down to 0% too often decreases it’s life span. And what helps in charging often? Wireless charging! You can put a charge pad on your desk, near your couch at home so your iPhone 8 will always be in the healthy charged range, something that’s just a bit more cumbersome if you need to connect it to a cable. A healthy battery means you can enjoy the phone longer. Read more on the best way to use your smartphone battery lifehacker

A tougher glass means fewer scratches (2)

Apple calls it “the toughest glass on a smartphone ever”. EverythingApplePro has done a great test to prove Apple is right. It’s great to watch the iPhone 8 is definitely a grade tougher. And fewer scratches means a higher resale value!

A powerful processor will survive more upgrades (3)

In the areas where it matters the iPhone 8 is about 75% (!!) faster than the iPhone 7 and more than twice as fast as the 6S. This assures an even longer support for upgrades and smooth operation with more heavy workloads. The bionic part of the A11 chip is also the first big feature since the 64 bits introduced in the iPhone 5. If Apple will release more features based on this neural engine to work on your iPhone 8.

More default storage lasts a phones lifetime (4)

iOS is increasingly relying on iCloud storage. Photos are only stored localy for speed while the original files are stored in iCloud. With iOS 11 Apple has introduced family sharing which makes it possible for the whole family to share one big 200GB storage for just 2,99 a month. Apple Music also stores your music library in iCloud and streams it when you listen to it, keeping a limited amount of songs on your device to reduce data usage.

Photos, videos and music are by far the largest consumers of local storage. So with all the available cloud storage options the new default device storage of 64GB should last you a phones lifetime.

iPhones depreciates less than other phones (5)

Apple phones are highly sought after and the high price creates a lot of demand on the second hand market. The iPhone 8 will remain expensive since Apple has a diverse portfolio with options at all price points. If you want to pay less you can still by the iPhone 7 or SE. So don’t expect the iPhone 8 to go down in price soon. People will want the latest and the greatest at a good price and that will keep the iPhone 8 an attractive second hand option for the next few years.
