I love quotes. I love finding them and writing them in my journal. I have so many quotes on many different topics. What are quotes really? A collection of words? I define quotes this way.

Quotes are repetitive.

Quotes are sustainable.

Quotes are drawn from the thoughts and minds of others.

Quotes are a mashup of words I agree with.

Quotes are words I live by.

Quotes are advice that I listen to and learn from.

Quotes touch my soul.

Quotes are alapabetic letters that form feelings.

Quotes say what I need to say, what I wanted to say, and what I couldn’t say.

Here are 10 of my favorite quotes:

1. The purpose of our lives is to be happy.”-Dalai Lama

Is happiness the most important purpose in our lives? It beats the alternative, sadness. Happiness is what you make of it. Only you can determine your degree of happiness.

2.” The two most important days in your life and the day you were born and the day you find out why.”-Mark Twain.

When I heard this quote, it made think about how important the day you die is. Could that day be the third most important date of your life? Christians look forward to that day so they can be with God. No one wants to die, but death is something we all have to do.

3. “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.”-Babe Ruth

Babe Ruth was an exceptional player of his era. He knew how to play the game of baseball. We all play the game of life. Some play it better than others. Some strike out. And others find it hard to step up to the plate. Life is a game that we all play individually and constantly.

4. “Be yourself; Everyone else is already taken.”-Oscar Wilde

There are so many quotes that tell us who we are. That tell us to be self-aware. We are who we are. We we are who we aspire to be. We can’t change unless we want to. No one else can change us but us.

5. “Life is a song- sing it. Life is a game- play it. Life is a challenge- meet it. Life is a dream- realize it. Life is a sacrifice- offer it. Life is love. Enjoy it.”-Sai Baba

Life is what you choose to make of it. Life is what happens when you live. Life is a cliche of choices. Life is as repetitive as it is renewable. And the art of loving is the art of life.

6. “Aspire to inspire before you expire.”-Eugene Bell Jr.

Isn’t it sad when people say they were inspired by someone after they have passed away? The quote makes it clear; be the inspiration now. Don’t wait. Inspiration can come in many forms. A soft word. A nice hug. A listening ear when needed. Or just being there. Don’t leave this world without making an impact on those whose lives you have been lucky enough to touch.

8. “Give people their flowers while they are still living.”-Unknown

My mom taught me this quote as well. She taught me how to live it. Don’t let the draped flowers over the casket of someone you love be the only flowers you have ever given them. Let them know how you feel as much as possible. Flowers are the fragrance of life. Our loved ones who’ve passed on can’t smell the flowers anymore. So honor, love, and appreciate loved ones while you can.

9. “Not everyone can be famous but everyone can be great, because greatness is determined by service.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King believed in service — service to God, family, and humanity. Life itself is about serving. We get served at restaurants. We get our cars serviced. We perform services at our jobs. We do volunteer work to serve others. And we serve the people we love. People will remember you for the kind of service you provided. And they will remember how you treated them while providing that service. Service with a smile. Service with an encouraging word. Saying thank you after receiving good service. People will never forget great service.

10. “Love your neighbor as youself”- Galatians 5:14 NIV

Love is one of the most important emotions in life. To be loved, we must show love. And to show love, we must love ourselves. No man is an island. We live with others. We must learn to get along with other people. If we want others to love and care for us, we must reciprocate our love, respect, and kindness toward them. It is our duty as humans. God sanctioned it. We are known by the way we love. And we are known by the way we show love. We can love the unloveable, our enemies, and those who don’t love us back because, through God, all things are possible! Love requires work. Do the best you can to love the way God requires.

Conclusion: is life oneself one big quote?

There is a famous quote by Jorge Luis Borges that says, “Life itself is a quotation.” Words have power no matter how you quote them. The power of your words holds meaning. Words can cut. Words can shape. Words can influence. Putting words together is like a puzzle. When everything is there, it can be put together. But when once piece is lost, it cannot be put together correctly. Words are like a butterfly net. We are word collectors, like the net, we gather, select, and collect our words before using them. We have the power to make our own quotes, quote ourselves, and live so others can quote us. I love quotes so much that I have written two quote books. I hope to publish them in the near future. I hope that someday day people will be quoting me. You can quote me on that!

Thank you for reading.
