“Freedom is a two-edged sword of which one edge is liberty and the other responsibility, on which both edges are exceedingly sharp; and which is not easily handled by casual, cowardly or treacherous hands.”
— Jack Whiteside Parsons

Modern man frequently overlooks the duality inherent in freedom, disregarding the delicate equilibrium between emancipating liberty and consequential responsibility. He wields the sword’s liberty-edge carelessly, only to bleed from the overlooked edge of responsibility. This self-inflicted wound stands as a bitter testament to the age-old adage — “What goes around comes around.”

Parsons encapsulates the intricate essence of freedom: responsibility and liberty, acting as two sides of the same coin. Freedom’s gifts are counterbalanced by the gravity of responsibility, a harmony forming the backbone of maturity and personifying the modern-day warrior.

Freedom signifies agency — over our life, decisions, and pursuits. However, this liberty doesn’t assure wisdom or favourable outcomes, but merely the right to choose — even if those choices culminate in adverse consequences. Every decision we make inevitably bears its outcome. Building the confidence to embrace the consequences, particularly those that are adverse or harmful, is a quintessential part of a man’s journey towards greatness.

A refusal to acknowledge responsibility leads to the gradual collapse of one’s life, culminating in mental degradation and eventual self-destruction.

Freedom is no trifling matter, ill-suited to the casual, the cowardly, or the treacherous. It demands courage, integrity, commitment, and a profound sense of responsibility. Parsons suggests that only those ready to grapple both edges of this universal sword can truly begin to appreciate the essence of freedom.
