The plan is to use it “some day,” and someday never comes.

The contents are precious, like the value we carry, but so precious that they're guarded and never used for their intended purpose. The time comes when it’s discarded as its expiration date arrives. The chances were never taken to enjoy the content.

Sometimes we put some of the contents to use, but sparingly out of fear of exhausting our resources, and looking forward to a special day, we know not when to use things we treasure and assume will always be there.

Growing up in the suburban parts of Nigeria, the grains we bought in the local market never had tags to indicate the expiration date. I can imagine a rice seller completely ignoring me or bursting into hilarious laughter, if I had dared to ask for the expiration date. She likely would beckon her seller friends to hear my ludicrous question. There would have been no doubt in their minds that a link was missing in my thinking cells.

I cannot recall, in those few decades, ever eating any grain that tasted like it had gone off. It may be that the rapid consumption did not leave enough time for the food to become inedible. Regardless…
