I loved Being Your Auntie
A Pantoum
I loved being your auntie,
I keep a lock of your hair in a box,
With photos, feathers, and flat stones,
I can still smell your strawberry curls.
I keep a lock of your hair in a box,
The photos could never quite capture your beauty,
Memories of three wonderful years,
This box could never hold all the love I have for you.
The photos could never quite capture your beauty,
Funeral roses, angels, and a tiny vest,
This box is no treasure chest,
But I can’t bear to part with the little things.
Funeral roses, angels, and a tiny vest,
Your voice has faded into background noise,
But I can open this box and think of you for a while,
I loved being your auntie.
