Interpretation

Our interpretation of what happened to us can either make or break us. For example, someone has said something to you. How we interpret what we hear from the other person can either sour or improve our relationship with them. If this is the case, we can benefit by changing how we see things.

How can we do it?

Make sure you don’t take it personally. Remember, if you are entitled to your opinion, so is the other person. Your position or belief differs from theirs; therefore, respect their views as much as you want them to respect yours.

Use empathy. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Understand what makes them say what they say and listen attentively. What would you feel, say, or do if it was you?

Be open-minded. It will make you approachable to others and make your relationship with them harmonious.

By following the above, you will have better emotional intelligence as you can convey your thoughts in a sensible, fair, and valid way.
