Let It Go or Let It Be?

Often when I was faced with emotional distress, especially in relationships, my family and friends often said, “ Oh Joe, just let it go.”
Well, no kidding, why didn’t I think of that? Just hit the delete button, clear it from my mind, and never think about it again.
As if I could erase the experience from my life altogether. Frankly, their well-meaning words would only exacerbate my feelings of frustration, unworthiness, inadequacy, guilt, and oftentimes, shame.
Then one day the Beatles’ song “Let It Be” came on the radio.
It was like I never heard it before. I’m well into my 60’s, so I promise you, I’ve heard it a gazillion times. But this time…it was different.
Something within me began to soften when I heard the refrain, Let it Be. My resistance to what was happening started to subside. I heard a voice in my head say, stop fighting what’s happening, be still sweetheart, just let it be.
The voice wasn’t saying pretend it didn’t happen, or be in denial of what I was feeling. No, they were…
