There’s an old Chinese proverb that I absolutely love…

If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.

Many of history’s brightest minds have come to the same conclusion: Happiness can be attained through service to others. Every day I try to do something that will change someone’s life — even if it’s just a smile or a few words of encouragement.

I do these things without expecting anything, although I always find that giving to others is returned unexpectedly. For example, I might spend time cheering someone up in a difficult situation. Without fail, someone is there for me when I need love and support.

Here are a few tips that I find helpful as I seek to be a more giving person:

Set an intention — Before giving, set the intention to do it with joy and enthusiasm.

Get creative — Consider giving in ways that don’t involve money or material items.

Start small — Even if you have limited resources, find a way to give something of value away each…
