The Secret to Happiness Is Giving to Others
There’s an old Chinese proverb that I absolutely love…
If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.
Many of history’s brightest minds have come to the same conclusion: Happiness can be attained through service to others. Every day I try to do something that will change someone’s life — even if it’s just a smile or a few words of encouragement.
I do these things without expecting anything, although I always find that giving to others is returned unexpectedly. For example, I might spend time cheering someone up in a difficult situation. Without fail, someone is there for me when I need love and support.
Here are a few tips that I find helpful as I seek to be a more giving person:
Set an intention — Before giving, set the intention to do it with joy and enthusiasm.
Get creative — Consider giving in ways that don’t involve money or material items.
