Realm— Telegram AMA — June 12
On Saturday, June 12, we had the pleasure to welcome to our Telegram chat:
We asked them questions about the development of Realm.
Some sentences have been slightly edited for readability but the meaning has been conserved.
Realm is a cross-chain, community-driven open-source project that encourages collectors and creators to express their artistic vision in the purest form: their own magical virtual realm.
With Realm, users can create unique and customizable virtual ecosystems filled with NFTs, own genetically encoded living NFT pets, travel between realms via augmented reality (AR), mint collectible NFTix to host exclusive exhibitions, and use live audio streaming to connect with friends and fans.
Realm will leverage integration with OpenSea, both via API connections and on the OpenSea marketplace. By leveraging the secure, stable marketplace, and a vast amount of NFT content on OpenSea, Realm can rapidly scale its interactions with the wider NFT ecosystem.
The $REALM token is a cross-chain token that functions as the primary utility token within the Realm metaverse. $REALM is initially an ERC-20 token that will also be available on Reef Chain, Polygon Layer 2, and BSC chains, which provides low-cost transactions for players.
Q — Ayeley from GAINS: What did you do before crypto and did you have any other previous venture in crypto? And what is your role with Realm?
A — Joban from Realm: Matt and I previously founded a web 2.0 tech business, where we built an internal GPS system and a software layer to connect people with buildings. We eventually sold that business to a tech billionaire. I’ve been investing in the blockchain space since 2013.
I’ve also worked as a technical consultant for large coworking and hospitality brands, and love building products with really nice UX.
My role is CPO and Creative Director, whilst Matt is CEO.
Q — Ayeley from GAINS: What is the Realm project about in a few simple sentences? And for how long have you been working on it? How many people are on the team?
A — Joban from Realm: Realm is a metaverse built out of lots of little micro verses that are connected together via portals. You can explore other creators’ realms and discover rare NFTs and upgrade your character as you go. Being fully customizable, you can create your own realm to look and do what you want.
Artists and collectors can also connect their wallets and display their NFTs in their own personal microverse.
We’ve been working on this for more than 6 months now, and we’re currently at 12 engineers and some awesome creatives and marketing people.
Q — Ayeley from GAINS: How easy is it to use? Do you require any technical skills, for instance, to customize your realm?
A — Joban from Realm: No you don't — we are really trying to give everyone a chance to create their own space — For example, non-technical players can choose from several Realm templates, such as Art Gallery, Cyberpunk, Samurai to easily create their own space. For skilled creators, Godot allows us to provide advanced tools for creation. Realm will ultimately contain a fully-fledged gaming ecosystem hosting features such as physics, game mechanics, and monetization opportunities.
Q — Twitter user @DogleTiyo: I saw that you plant real trees when trees are planted in Realm. Is the technology that realm uses environmentally friendly? and what is the main purpose of it?
A — Joban from Realm: Yes, we are really aware of our environmental impact, and have spent a long time thinking about how virtual worlds can impact the real world. We are using Polygon to be more efficient when processing transactions. So for instance, a transaction processed on Polygon is about 8500x fewer emissions than a transaction processed on Layer 1 Ethereum.
So to counteract the CO2 we emit, we have partnered with Eden Reforestation, which will plant trees in real life every time someone plants a virtual tree in Realm. When you plant virtual trees in Realm, they make fruit which the pets and creatures that live in realms eat. This creates an economy inside realms that also fixes the real world.
It’s very important that we become carbon neutral using these mechanisms as it helps us appeal to a broad market and also means the mainstream press will cover our metaverse. We really want the whole world to experience Realm, not just crypto people as it makes for a strong business and token.
Q — Telegram user Karoceh: Can you tell us a little about the advantages of Realm in terms of graphics and visualization? What are the minimum specifications required to run this game?
A — Joban from Realm: Players will be able to access Realm on all sorts of devices — web versions will run on most systems, and mobile will be possible on any phone that can normally run a mobile game. Desktop users with nice GPUs will have a higher fidelity experience, but we want people to be able to experience REALM without a top-spec device.
Q — Telegram user Memo: One of the characteristics of the NFT is that it cannot be divisible, and therefore the copyright will only be owned by its creator. How can Realm divide the copyright when creating kingdoms?
A — Joban from Realm: Realms can be co-created and the royalties from entry (NFTix) or sales can be split between the creators — we have some very cool smart contracts to achieve this!
Q — Telegram user August: I read that users can move to various realms through an infinite number of microverses, but really can users’ pets be moved as well? Or can each pet only exist in a specific kingdom?
A — Joban from Realm: Your pets will be able to explore with you! There are different pets that come from different realm worlds, but they will be able to explore and level up and grow with you!
Q — Ayeley from GAINS: What is the token use case and how does it capture the value of the ecosystem you’re building?
A — Joban from Realm: So the token is the main utility token for the ecosystem — you can use it to trade and buy NFTix (access to events in realms), buy pets, and plant trees.
It’s worth noting that the token will also be available cross-chain, on Polygon (Matic) and Reef chain, so transaction fees will be super low for users :)
The token is called $REALM, of course :)
Q — Telegram user Gutierrez04: You mention that we can earn $ REALM tokens for dominating kingdoms, but could you really explain how we could “dominate kingdoms”? Will it be an easy mission to accomplish? Or only very little could earn $ REALM since there are very few kingdoms?
A — Joban from Realm: We’ve set aside a massive amount of the supply (25%!) for the community and will be rewarding people for exploring and completing challenges. There will be loads of different challenges and rewards, from tokens to rare NFTs
Q — Telegram user Dayo: What security features do you have to convince users of the safety of their Funds? Also, do you have plans for future audits?
A — Joban from Realm: The team is all public and the 3 founders have worked together on a previous business for 6 years. Our CTO worked for the German government analyzing the Blockchain. We have 11 engineers and all our code goes through multiple quality assurance stages. After that, it goes to an external solidity developer, and finally for audit before being shipped. We use industry-standard security measures that we learned when securing a large amount of data in our previous businesses.
Q — Telegram user Antonio González: The Realm project has enormous potential for growth, but on their website, you do not talk about partnerships with artists. Can you give details of whether the platform will be exclusively for games or can it be used for other purposes such as NFT art sales?
A — Joban from Realm: Good question — we have some really cool partnerships that we will be announcing soon (Join our Telegram community to keep up to date) — for instance, some very well-known brands of NFT creatures will be creating their own realm and bringing them to life!
Yes! Social interaction is a key feature of Realm — you can meet in your realm, or journey together to other amazing realms. It’s all about experiencing these things together!
Q — Ayeley from GAINS: Did you raise funds so far? If so, how did you handle them? Are you planning to do any future raises?
A — Joban from Realm: So far we’ve raised over $2.5m for the project from some great investors
We plan to use the investment to grow our team, accelerate the development of the simple creator tools that democratize creation, and build a wide range of smart objects for artists to use to express themselves in virtual spaces. You can read more about our first investment round here.
Q — Ayeley from GAINS: There are a lot of NFT related projects that exist currently and more springing up every day. What sets you apart from the rest
A — Joban from Realm: I think what sets us apart is that we are not confined to being an NFT project — we’re allowing people to create their own micro verses which will become a huge creative metaverse and allow people to express themselves and monetize their creations in really unique ways.
NFTs are a big part of it of course (even a realm is an ERC1155), but it’s about experiences and it is even possible to build games in Realm!
Q — Twitter user @Vyach235: Realm is built with Godot open-source game engine. So can you tell us more about Godot? What advantages does the Realm have by being built by Godot? How does Godot bring better service to users of your platform?
A — Joban from Realm: So for those who don’t know, Godot is a powerful, lightweight, and community-driven game engine that is very different from centralized engines such as Unity and Unreal. Working Godot means the Realm engine is completely independent of any centralized entity that could impose censorship or control.
One of the advantages of using Godot is that it allows Realm to provide a wide array of creative tools for players and creators. It also gives efficient gameplay — so file sizes are smaller and people can play on mobile, web, desktop, even VR in 2022.
Q — Telegram user Keymer: All non-fungible gaming and tokening platforms say they have the “rarest NFTs”, but since Realm also claims to have the rarest collectibles, could you tell us what really makes a collectible the most “rare”?
A — Joban from Realm: Not only will we be partnering with some really high profile creators and collectors, but some Realm items will be genuinely one of a kind (for instance pets) by using randomness to generate them, and then further mutations from breeding!
Q — Ayeley from GAINS: What stage is the project at? And what should we look forward to in the coming months?
A — Joban from Realm: Sure, so where we stand right now is we have produced all our smart contracts and they are going to audit shortly. We have realms working with full multiplayer functionality which is great. We have built the realm creation pipeline that simplifies the import of assets that will go into realms. Once we have launched the token in mid-July we can move onto Realm creation tools that will make it easier for creators to create their own virtual Realm. For more info on the development timeline, you can go to our website. www.realm.art
Then we will continue to work with some awesome partners to bring some amazing experiences (I can’t reveal them yet, unfortunately) and work on more VR implementations in 2022.
Q — Twitter user @mandbnga5: Do you think NFT is a trend or a bubble? As a project to build a long-term roadmap for NFT, what is the plan to make NFT more popular with the community? What is Realm’s role in the long-term development of NFT?
A — Joban from Realm: Another great question! We think the NFT revolution is just starting. We don’t really see it as an art revolution so much as it’s a revolution in digital ownership around digital art and artists. What’s super about this is, in this digital revolution, we can bypass the traditional gatekeepers and buy, sell, or share in a way we, the community, see fit.
It’s important to note we’re not an NFT marketplace. But we will be working with NFT artists and are right now building those relationships to support big players and emerging artists. Our long-term goal is to create an interactive and immersive experience for digital art that’s more than just a listing site. We want artists, collectors, and fans to have a full experience in a totally unique visual and audio way
Some of the ways we’re going to make NFTs noticeable in the community are through exploration, gamification, artist grants from the Realm Foundation, editorial content, and much more!
Thank you for coming in, Joban. It was a pleasure having you in our group today, and taking the time to answer our questions. Where can we follow you to stay updated? — Ayeley Commodore-M | GAINS Associates
