Little Lemon Cookies

i’m sitting here munching,
crunching on a handful
of lemon cookies,
and let me tell you,
these things are marvelous.

they crunch between the teeth,
grinding down to crumbs
in moments, melting
on the tongue like baked cream

sour like lemons and sweet
like honeyed tea, with a hint
of some spice i can’t quite place
(maybe because allergies
have turned my five senses
into three-and-a-half)

in any case, they are delectable
delights, something like little
English tea cookies for a tiny
platter, only instead i eat them
with my fingers and no tea,
since i’m not british and idon’t
have the energy for that.

and now i’ll be off to go
crunch, crunch, crunch
a few more.
