Meeting Time

Our first goal when discussing team norms was finding a time for regular weekly Zoom meetings. We decided that Saturday at 4pm PST worked for everyone. We also realized that some of our teammates are in different time zones, so we added that information to a Google spreadsheet. We agreed to be mindful of teammates in different time zones, since it may be early morning or late at night for them when we are trying to get in contact.

Communication

For team communication, we all decided that the best way to communicate would be via Slack. We set up a direct message group on Slack and agreed to check it regularly. In addition, we added other forms of contact information to a Google Doc in case someone isn’t responding on Slack. However, we recognized that, due to current circumstances, some people won’t always be available. We agreed to let our teammates know if something comes up so that the team is not left in the dark.

Work Responsibilities

As for work responsibilities, we decided that the best way to do things would be to make individual responsibilities clear, with specific requirements and expected completion time. However, we also agreed to be understanding if someone is having difficulty, and ask our teammates for help when the need arises.

We also agreed that it would be best if everyone could get to work on areas they are interested in. Everyone took turns discussing both their areas of experience as well as areas they are interested in learning more about. Here is the result:

  • Ty: Background in programming, interested in everything
  • Xiaohai: Visual design, can do coding
  • Yawen: Coding, visual design
  • Eli: Design/level design, programming, can do art/sound
  • Yinchen: Programming, narrative content
  • Suyie: Programming, design

Conflict Resolution

Finally, in the event of conflict within the team, we agreed to be civil with one another. We also thought it best to address conflicts in team meetings so that the other team members could mediate and resolve the issue. Finally, we agreed that, when in doubt, we should playtest both ideas to observe the result.

Thus concludes out team’s norms. We hope that sticking to these norms will allow our team to be a productive yet easygoing work environment. We will also be revisiting these norms as the project progresses to make any necessary revisions.
