Maldita Castilla
Locomalito executes Ghosts’n Goblins
Maldita Castilla is basically Ghosts’n Goblins. Everything, from the various weapons dynamics, to the zombies, to the deliberately high difficulty, even to the starting music screams Capcom arcade-era hit.
I think Locomalito did a great job here. The atmosphere is completely right, and the original arcade mood is intact. I have to say we peobably need to work more on this young-at-heart arcade mood, where everything is done to challenge the player.
The game design is simple but really refined. What you get is a pretty smooth experience, an immediate satisfaction even when you start dying a lot due to the high difficulty.
Controls are extremely slick and polished, and really everything responds immediately (no inertia and stuff) giving you a great sense of control over the character.
All in all a pretty good experience, easy to jump in and very direct. It’s hard, so I guess it will mostly appeal people who loved Ghosts’n Goblins back in the days of arcades.
