What’s the greatest open-world game of all time?

Is it Zelda: Breath of the Wild? It has the Nintendo sheen and a world filled with wild experimentation. Is it GTA5, with Rockstar’s patented humor and focus on realism? How about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s dark fantasy world and dimensional story? These are strong contenders. Up until 2022, they would have been excellent choices.

But there is a new game on the (Elden) throne.

Elden Ring released on February 25th to near universal acclaim. According to the Playstation Lifestyle, Elden Ring is the 15th highest rated game in Metacritic history. While websites like Metacritic aren’t the end all be all for what makes something quality, it’s hard to argue with those kind of numbers.

But what makes Elden Ring tick? What specific brand of alchemy made this game take over the world? I want to focus on a few things, but let’s first take a slight detour into the time before The Lands Between.

The Time Before…
