Origen is a well-known esports team created in Spain by Enrique ‘xPeke’ Martinez, after he left his former team Fnatic in late 2014. A good team of competitors overall, they unfortunately finished the Summer Split 2020 at the 10th place of the standing. This is their story.

From rookies to notably absent

2015 was a good year for the team: 2nd place in Summer Playoffs against FNC, 3rd at Worlds losing 0–3 against SKT. Their first year on the esports stage was very promising. On the European stage, they reached the second place of the standing in 2016 Spring Playoffs. In the Summer Split of the same year, they fell to the 9th place. The famous face of Origen, FORG1VEN, had to leave for his military service in Greece. Not qualified in 2017 in LEC (EULCS at that time), players progressively left OG.

xPeke then hired players with too little of knowledge and experience. Too many things were said to be left aside by the organization. Because of this in 2018, all players of the roster left again, leaving their owner alone. Everybody thought it was the end for Origen. But they are competitors, and the team’s sudden resurrection caused a lot of ink to flow. Back on tracks in 2019, they got 2nd in Spring Playoffs 2019, falling again to the 8th place in Summer.

Summer Split 2020

Back to the 4th place in Spring 2020, they unfortunately fell to the last place of the standing a few days ago. In general, Origen’s pattern seems to be quite the same each year. Good position in Spring and falling in Summer, their 10th place is not very surprising, but still disappointing. This is the tweet that Origen posted on Twitter after they failed to qualify to Playoffs and so Worlds.

2020 is a strange year for everyone, players have to compete from their gaming house and they can no longer go to the LEC Studios. It advantages some teams, such as 2020 rookies MAD Lions, but can also demoralize those who are used to play on stage or showmen. Weeks 2,3 and 5 were quite optimistic for Origen, winning some matches and staying in the middle of the ranking. Then from week 6 to 8, Origen is slowly falling to the end of the classification. This table below sums up the whole Summer Split season of Origen.

Origen’s roster and achievements

Origen changed the roster during the 2019 mercato, taking Xerxe from Splyce in Jungle position, Upset from Schalke in Botlane, Destiny from Mammoth (Oceania) in Support and Jactroll from Vitality as a substitute Support. The two teammates already part of Origen before 2019, more precisely since 2018, were Alphari in Toplane and Nukeduck in Midlane. They own the record of the longest game of this Summer Split, against Rogue, which lasted 46mn. Upset made one of the Top 5 KDA of the split: 5.9 (61/22/69), as well as the Top 5 Multikills: 1 Quadra, 1 Triple and 4 Double. Finally, Upset once again has one of the Top 5 Creep Score per Minute: 9.7.

Origen hopes for 2021

Even if Origen finished 2020 on a bad note, it’s important to remember that they reached the 4th place during Spring. 2021 sounds promising, especially when one looks back in March-April. Nothing can be worse than early 2020. Moreover, Origen has Upset, a very strong player who signed with his team until the end of 2021. Until then, fans cannot wait for Summer Split Playoffs, which will start on Friday 21st.
