Capcom Could Be Working On A New Mega Man Game This Year

Capcom has been absolutely killing it lately. Between shipping 10 million units of Monster Hunter: World last year alone and the Resident Evil 2 remake receiving critical praise, Capcom found themselves with a pocket full of profits to end 2018. The publisher did so well last year that they were crowned the best-ranked publisher of 2018 by review aggregate site, Metacritic. Let’s take a closer look at how they became the best-ranked publisher and how Mega Man factors into their rave reviews.

Q3 2018 Profitability

Capcom had just come off their most profitable fiscal year ever that ended in March 2018 where they increased their net sales by 8.4%compared to the previous fiscal year. Financials that were just released for Q3 2018 saw net sales increase by nearly 30% year over yearand profits skyrocket by 108% compared to the previous year as well. The only major difference in the quarterly sales stats is the release of the Mega Man X Legacy Collections (1 + 2). Capcom stated that both games “performed well” due to their “dedicated fan base.”

According to Capcom, Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2 sold 920.000 copies from July to December 2018. Although this is a far cry from the 10 million units that Monster Hunter: World sold in 2018, it should also be noted that Mega Man 11 managed to sell a very respectable 870.000 copies as of December as well (I can’t math…how much is that?). This impressive feat may just lay the foundation for future iterations of the Mega Man series (which had been dead for almost 15 years prior to last year).

More Mega Man in 2019?

According to an interview with 4Gamer, the producer of Mega Man, Kazuhiro Tsuchiya hinted that 2019 could see the company work on a new Mega Man game. Kazuhiro stated that “In 2018, we were able to safely release Mega Man 11. This is all [thanks] to all of the game fans. In 2019, I would like to make steady preparations for what’s next, so there may not be any major action, but I hope you can all watch over me with warm eyes…!”

This vague, yet ominous statement from the game’s producer lends the imagination to consider the possibility of a future Mega Man game on a next generation console or handheld. Capcom knows that they can only piggyback on the successes of Monster Hunter: World for so long and with the expansion not slated for release until Fall 2019, the publisher might be looking for an easy to develop Mega Man game to fill the void in their game release schedule after Devil May Cry 5 which has historically missed sales targets in the past due to lack of consumer demand.

What’s your take? Do you want to see Capcom release another Mega Man game this year? Let us know!
