What cheeky pranks will game developers play this April Fools’ Day?

April Fools is just around the corner. What kind of pranks will game developers pull this time around? What would you like to see?

Here are some from previous years which got a good laugh out of me:

Runescape’s Bouncing Cabbages (2009)

This event happened in 2009, back when I was just in 10th grade. It was the first time I encountered an in-game April Fools’ joke.

Cabbages would start exhibiting odd behaviour such as randomly bouncing up and down like (like in the gif above). Whenever a player tried to pick one up, it would hop away and say things like “I’m free!” or “Pick someone your own size!”

If you catch it whilst it was running around, it becomes an equippable weapon that you could toss at other players.

Alternatively, it was also possible to tap/kick the cabbage around to certain locations. Players who managed to get the cabbage to “Oo’glog” would trigger a special event: the privilege to talk to “Brassica Prime” the ultimate bouncing cabbage god:

The cabbage god believes that power comes from deliciousness and that the more delicious a fruit or vegetable is, the more likely it will be picked to spread its seeds around.

I command the power of highly concentrated nutrients. There is no greater force in all of creation.

War Thunder’s Giant Snail Terrorizing Berlin (2014)

The devs at Gaijin Entertainment are known to pull these pranks every year, but my personal favorite was the giant snail prank. People called the snail “Gaijilla” since this event occurred just a few weeks from the Godzilla reboot.

Gaijilla’s main attack was shooting electricity from it’s tentacle eyes. The creature wasn’t as threatening as it looked, because it was slow moving and slow to charge its attacks, but it was rampaging through Berlin and needed to be stopped.

Guild Wars 2 “I Believe I can Fly”

The Guild Wars team has a long history of pulling pranks each year, ever since 2007.

On 2015, they made the players pose in the shape of an airplane (spreading their arms outwards) whilst making some incredibly stupid airplane noises whilst running / jumping around.

When players start running, they will make a take off sound. When they stop moving, they’ll make a landing sound.

Special mentions go to their 2007 sex change prank where players had their genders reversed and their 2008 “have you lost weight?” prank where everyone became stick figures:

What do you guys think of these pranks? If you were a game dev, what kind of prank would you pull?
