There is a certain charm to hand drawn styles and with many game engines becoming more and more flexible, we are able to revisit some of our most nostalgic visual styles with much greater resolution and fidelity than ever before.

2-D development represents a different bar for entry for a lot of new devs. Devs with a love of traditional art can now create games that capture the look and feel of a painting while still staying true to the pixel base games of the SNES era.

The 2D Handcrafted Art pack is a perfect addition to your Unity kit when starting 2D development for several reasons, so let’s take a look.

2D Handcrafted Art

This pack is absolutely chock full of assets, with all the pieces for a neigh infinite scroll for your 2D game.

The kit is fully equipped with prefabricated material effects, sprites and animations.

The pack comes with assets for every conceivable layer to create any degree of depth that you need.

Each asset is hand drawn and done well. The pieces individually have the proper depth and space to them.

The demo scene has a lot of tools that you would use regardless, so it would be worth picking up to deconstruct and learn from the level that’s setup in the pack.

The developer (Alien Nude) Also has a wide array of 2D art that ARE paid and are priced well. These packs are a wide array of themes in the same visual style.

I would wholeheartedly suggest this pack for anyone thinking of diving into 2D development in Unity. I actually realized that the creators have another pack on the Unreal store so I will definitely be taking a look at that for our Unreal Users.

Another point to take away from this, though it does not pertain directly to the pack itself.

Some Pros to force your hand

  • Free is always hard to beat.
  • It showcases a perfect layout for setting up your own scenes
  • The art and style is really nice, perfectly able to be used in your own project with no quality loss.
  • Perfect as free and quick download to prototype your own work and as stand ins until you have your own art.

Some cons to take away.

  • The quality and uniqueness of the art may lock you into that style, which is very reliant on the author of the pack.
  • The other kits do cost money.
