Automotive Materials in Unreal; GameTextures Market Peeks

Car materials are actually a set of materials that GameTextures.com usually does NOT touch.

The biggest reason being that a lot of the heavy lifting that goes into creating good car materials is on the shader end of things and in that regard this kit really gets the job done.

This kit has a huge amount of materials included in it, we talked last week about a great VFX kit made by the team over at Unity and this one is in the same vein in terms of quality and depth.

The content includes pretty much any material you may need to build a vehicle of a non-military variety. (some of the GT camo materials would help round that one out if you wanted.)

The Paint itself comes in a ton of variety with a master material that would allow you to add your own colors if you wanted.

The material set up is instructive, so that is well worth a look to see how they set the shader up to better simulate the unique effects found in car paint.

The materials look great and the instances in place have a ton of options to them.

The interior materials are a very nice addition, at first glance I was under the impression that this was only for the car paint but the variety in the kit is really broad.

All in all, this is a perfect general addition to nearly any project looking to create realistic or near realistic cars. There are PBR and Non-PBR materials included in this pack so do not discount it if you were veering away from PBR.

Some Pros to force your hand

  • Both PBR and Non-PBR materials
  • Large amount of customizable material option
  • Materials for pretty much any and all sections of a vehicle.

Some cons to take away.

  • The usefulness is limited if you have no vehicles, though not totally useless. As with most materials you can usually find other things they can be with some adjustment.
