For years, creating perfect fabric and cloth simulations was reserved for the Computer Scientists at Pixar and Disney. Making great cloth simulations was an insane amount of work that required insane amounts of processor power.

Today, we have Marvelous Designer. Billed as the most powerful cloth simulation software on the market, this software has completely democratized fabric simulations — and has become a central tool in our belts at GameTextures.

The strengths of this program become clear whenever Keegan uses it to apply fabric simulation to his modeled piping and then outputting heights for Matt, our main Substance Artist, to use and it created…well it created some really awesome sci-fabric trims.

“Marvelous designer is a great piece of software even if you have no intention of doing clothing for characters. At GT we use MD to create fabric patterns and sci-fi insulation for creating pipes and padded materials.”-Keegan Keene

Marvelous Designer is on its 8th version right now and some significant changes from the previous one make it even easier to use.

- Remeshing (beta)

- 3D sewing

- Sculpt mode

- Trace Patterns with UV Map

- Adjust Trim Weight

- Automated Arrangement point creation

One of the major strengths of the program is how easily it works with other design programs. Interfacing easily into Blender, Maya, Substance Designer, etc.

Between Matt and Keegan they worked on the pictured materials with Blender3D, Substance Designer and Marvelous Designer as well as utilizing the GameTextures.com Materializer pipeline tool.

All in all, its a fantastic tool, I know Keegan would not want to work without it. They offer a 30 day free trial that you can take for a test drive!
