Building Stylized with the Low Poly Environment Pack in Unreal Engine 4

Stylized models and materials have never been in higher demand, ever since it has shifted from a choice of necessity to one of style or theme the myriad of different ways to do it have been rabidly devoured.

In some parts this is nostalgia but I would hazard to say that when it comes to visuals it provides a degree of change, eye relief even, from the hyper-real you find plastered in most of the AAA sphere.

The pack comes with a bunch of assets. Grass, rocks and stylized building blocks can be put together however you see fit to create simple but beautiful scenes.

The rocks are the strongest part of this pack, while the buildings and props are awesome the rocks are where you will get the most longevity. Interesting placement and creative rotations will let you use them nearly indefinitely.

The packs organization is easy to parse and search. No SM_ prefixes here but you can add that yourself if you start running into problems or conflicts with other assets you pull in.

As a rule it is always better to rename the assets to follow your own internal conventions anyway, if you are using multiple packs then you may have a different naming style for each one and that leads to pure madness in the long run.

The buildings have a great looking adobe and wood style. The style itself IS very specific, heavy triangulation and an almost jagged looking surface but it is definitely consistent and I personally find it to be appealing.

There are not a lot in the way of actual buildings however, a decent array of props in general but the building pieces are going to leave you with a degree of sameness to the scene if you only use them.

All in all, a great pack for the price point! It comes with a skybox, some background set pieces and most importantly some nice stylized rocks.

Some Pros to force your hand

  • Easy to use, easy to build
  • All the tools you need to flesh out a basic scene.
  • Generic enough to be used in the long term, better then standard “Filler” assets
  • Cheap

Some cons to take away.

  • Not many buildings, not ideal as a standalone pack for building out an entire game.
