A lot of the time crafting a game is all about trying to capture an aesthetic. Often times that can be like trying to catch lightning in a bottle, trying to find the things that just make your end users “Get” your vision.

Steampunk is definitely one of those aesthetics that can be hard to capture but is so prevalent across the industry. There are some that do it extremely well, Dishonored and Amnesia come to mind.

This kit is an incredibly useful one, going into it I dove in with an eye towards confirming its steampunk status and walked away with not only confirmed but a wealth of information and appreciation for the creator.

First things first, that price is fantastic for what is offered. Well designed Blueprints, meshes and textures all ready to plug and play? Already intrigued.

Folder hierarchy is nothing to write home about, good or bad and honestly that’s a good thing. Everything is easy to find and there is no need on the dev to juggle the different folders around.

I do not usually start with going over the Blueprints but they are really the highlight of this pack. A ton of great assets are great but some Blueprints you can deconstruct and poke around in to see how they tick is a resource that cannot be denied.

This only broke my brain a little bit poking through.

Breaking apart the blueprints makes for a fantastic educational aid and just using them is a great development aid. Why reinvent the wheel.

Now onto the assets themselves, actually not as large of a pack once you remove the blueprints but still a ton of cool assets. What is a steampunk asset pack without some heckin pipes?

The meshes are built in such a way that you can mix, match and build your own pipe networks while also incorporating all of the blueprints you need. The Demo level itself was also incredibly dynamic and gamified, I honestly enjoyed following the prompts to each blueprint example and reading the explanation for them.

This kit is one that is definitely here to give you an edge when it comes to trying to catch that lightning, you just need to build the bottle.

Some Pros to force your hand

  • Fantastic learning tool for BP construction
  • Captures the aesthetic well enough.

Some cons to take away.

  • The texture quality on some of the assets is not where I would want it, but that is easily rectified.
