World War I Trench Project

Dan Rose, constant GT Blog Contributor and industry professional in his own right has done us ALL a favor and presented a phenomenal Post-Mortem on one of his most recent personal projects.

This Trench Kit originally began as a project outlined for his students, a challenge to create their own diorama based on assets provided by him. The idea would be that they would take the original models and push them to their limits utilizing their own reference and layout.

As a personal challenge and with the end goal of creating a saleable product on Sketchfab, Dan set out to do the same project during his daily commute. Part personal growth, part solid use of normally useless time.

The benefits of the post mortem are multiple, mainly I would like to highlight that Dan realized relatively soon what parts of his kit would go on to be saleable and what ones would not and adjusted his trajectory as he needed. It pays to be light on your feet sometimes.

Please go and read their actual Post Mortem here:

This article was only a brief overview and I cannot reinforce how important reading these are to developers of all kinds. These articles will always serve to be a highlight to these post mortems. They are invaluable to us all and everyone should go read them! These minefields have already been swept by those that came before and while you will likely find some on your own, you can at least avoid the ones that have been shown.
