Whether you like nature or avoid it at all costs there are several things that are ever present across the world. Outside of a few select areas you will never find a person that does not know what a tree is.

This can make them one of the harder things to get right, not quite on the same level as rocks but in a different way. Anecdotally it feels like you are far more likely to consciously notice aspects that are wrong rather than the subconscious sense of “wrong” you can get from even well developed rocks.

The Brain does what the Brain do, though. It will fill in a lot of the blanks, it’s why stylized stuff works almost better than realistic.

Working with trees in Unity can be pretty fun.

The Hierarchy is solid on this one. As dense as it needs to be to properly organize things without creating a rats nest of folders to dig through. This pack also support the new (at the time of writing) HD and LW RP shaders and those are safer to use with a bit of quarantine if only for your sanity.

The kit comes with…a ton of trees and a great example map of what it looks like whenever you paint them in.

The materials vary, they have a “Cheaper” Variant of the Fir trees that still looks really good. These cheaper versions are all placed on one atlas at 2k Resolution. This would definitely help when loading a large forest, allowing that texture to be potentially the only one referenced for everything in render distance.

The Non-cheap versions are all created with 4k textures with different variations of bark and leaves. A bit more expensive but it would be relatively easy to pepper a few of these in your forest or save them for sections where the player will be more up close and personal with the trees.

There are also dead and snow variations, adding a lot of potential variation when setting up your scene.

The tree painting is just a lot of fun to play around with. I did this on another pack I looked over recently that should release in a few weeks time. There are so many things you can do to make every stroke of the terrain brush generate some really unique looking spreads. It’s pretty awesome.

This pack is created with a realistic look in mind and it hits a good point with them that would look great in any scene. I found that the spread of different seasonal trees as well as definitely cheaper options were a huge plus for the pack.

Also included are the LW and HD Render Pipeline packs, which are a huge plus and honestly going into the future should be something added to any pack going on the marketplace. It is just a sharp contrast between the amount of work you have to do setting up your own shaders etc for that or downloading one that the developer made specifically for their own pack. That is specifically why we built the GT Toolkit at GameTextures.com to reflect those changes with our own HD and LW RP assets.

The developer has a robust support and community interaction setup, you can jump into their Facebook Page, Discord or check out their site.

Here are some other assets from this developer!

Some Pros to force your hand

  • Robust support network.
  • Looking at their other packs, clearly a practiced hand at this.
  • Cheap and HD variations let you adjust your setup as you need.

Some cons to take away.

  • There are no cons that I could find, there may be some if my knowledge was deeper in regards to how the set up for the terrain painting goes but it seems solid to me.
