Xray Shaders are cool. -M. Haggerty, 2019

There, said it; won’t take it back. Quoted even.

One of my favorite memories of development in school was whenever a friend did some crazy business with an Unreal shader that applied a neon glow and transparency combination, utilizing the mesh data itself.

It was awesome.

With my love established, let’s jump into what I delved into today with my Unity Marketplace Adventures.

MK Xray Free

The first thing to look at is how relatively pleasant the Unity experience is in regards to pulling assets in. The asset store is accessible from inside the engine itself. I hope more engines make this standard practice in the future!

After the package is imported, there are a few models for testing the materials themselves. All in all it is pretty lightweight.

The materials look pretty great in action, under the demo scenes basic lighting they look perfect for holograms or other effects.

The materials themselves are simple and easy to use, you can change the interior and the rim colors to whatever you like.

The adjustments are easy and can be seen in real time.

With multiple material IDs on the same mesh you can see a ton of really cool potential here.

This is one of the test meshes included in the pack for the creepiest xray look to start your day.

All in all, an extremely nice addition to your project if it calls for effects of this kind.

The materials worked on the most recent build at the time of writing and have no reports of issues or problems from the past. Stability is always nice.

Some Pros to force your hand

  • Easy to use
  • Free sets the bar for entry pretty low
  • Can easily mix and match with other materials for unique effects

Some cons to take away.

  • You may have issues adding complexity to the shader
