Every time I think of space, the scene where the millenium falcon is escaping from hoth is what jumps to mind. Dodging and diving through a huge asteroid field set the tone for an entire generation about what these things should definitely look like.

Mind you, they are wrong. Totally wrong. But it’s still compelling imagery. I don’t think erring on the side of artistic flair is really a crime so this pack is right up my alley when it comes to fleshing out any space scenes I may have in my own head.

You can check out the developers video breakdown of the kit here!

Try the included mini game. Packaged version(win64):

While I could NOT get the minigame working from the project, the above download link works fine and it’s a fun little shooter.

The folder hierarchy is a bit of a mess, this could be partly due to some of the constraints that the marketplace puts on the developers though. The problem here is that it could be hard to, at a glance, separate the pack assets from the demo game assets.

Not a huge issue to be fair but a potentially annoying one.

The meshes are well made and just as simple as they need to be, they are built to be destroyed ( as seen in the mini-game). This can look really bad on some assets but on these ones it looks pretty alright. The game does not have the physics settings that I personally would use but that does not detract from the pack in any way so I would not judge it based on that if you decided to try out the demo.

The asteroids come in all different sizes and shapes, though the largest one would be a bit samey without doing some different tricks to the material of it.

The space rocks do not have a ton of polygons to them, the materials make good use of normal data to give a lot of interesting definition to the asteroids.

The materials are all built from a master material and then instanced out from there, it is a pretty simple material but it does everything it needs to do with enough levers to make changing it around relatively easy.

You could probably swap out these materials with our own if you want to add more variation to the rocks!

The pack is definitely worth its cost but not much more than that I think. There are definitely some interesting aspects to it and it clearly works well in a game environment based on the demo that we can play.

Materials and Meshes in this pack are both solid and easy to use, the Blueprints included may need some work.

If you need asteroids, taking this and mixing and matching it with some of the previously covered asset packs would definitely be a force multiplier for your project.

At the time of writing the minigame was broken, there were issues involved with the BP_Asteroid that were causing headaches that I could not solve. The developer does not seem to have a contact point where I can reach them when it comes to this so here is to hoping that they see this and fix the issue.

Some Pros to force your hand

  • Good price for a few nice meshes and materials.
  • Demo game is fun and showcases clearly how well these assets can work.
  • Materials give a decent amount of control over how the asteroids work, you can definitely get away with using our materials as well with these to change it up.

Some cons to take away.

  • Folder hierarchy is a bit odd and can be confusing.
  • The meshes are destructible but may need some tweaking for some more believable destruction physics.
