Subway material testing

As a Senior Environment Artist at Terraform Studios, they have had their hands in some awesome visual development projects to flesh out the studio portfolio. They have a personal portfolio that reflects the skillset worthy of that role, their work on Bad Travelling, Love Death and Robots is a perfect example of the full gamut of their ability to build a concept from top to bottom.

Concept art as a rule has always lived in a weird place when it comes to the public facing aspect of it, so to speak. What often gets posted on Artstation is the shiniest and most refined versions of a piece when what usually happens is a concept artist throws together some thumbnails and color tests and the environment artists run full tilt with that while the rendering and further exploration comes later. Si -Chen Wang gives us, on some of their best pieces, near enough to a full breakdown of their process as one can get without dedicating to doing a breakdown specifically.

Tomorrow

There is a homey, worn in or lived in feeling to their environments even at their most cyclopean scale that speak to a living city existing in the background. Even the intense scale of some of Si -Chen Wang’s work cannot betray the fact that they have a clear vision of how life in these places happens and that it happens around and intertwined with the architecture of the city, not despite it.
