Deserts are probably my favorite terrain in games. A close second is frosty, arctic lands. Something about the harsh extremes, the clean vistas of both appeals to me for reasons I don’t know if I understand. It is likely why both of those environments feature strongly as a protagonists home in so many epic tales. Not a lot says hard living like these places.

This pack brings something like that to the table, a feeling bottled and offered to you in a way that you can turn into your own “thing”.

I dove into this pack not really knowing what to expect from it, $9.99 seemed like a cheap enough buy in for what looked like a beautiful pack and it ended up being 100% true. The terrain included in this pack as well as the three maps that make up its showcase are beautiful pieces.

Simple and sweet, hard to find anything wrong with this but the pack IS very simple in what it includes so if it was complicated that would indicate some bigger problems.

The tiling on this is actually really good. There is a lot of the time on any sort of distance terrain where you can pick out the tiling, it can be hard to maintain the level of blending needed to keep the terrain believable but this dev shows a very deft hand at it.

The material applied to the landscape is instanced from a master and it is my first real close look inside of a landscape material. It is built differently than I had imagined it would be but it all makes sense.

The master material is definitely instructive and is very nicely annotated, you could go in here and change things to suit your needs and the developer has also included notation on how to incorporate the included material functions into the master material.

There are three material functions that are built to layer together, helping to disrupt any tiling artifacts even from a far distance. Really well done here.

This pack offers some incredibly beautiful terrain. Definitely worth using and exploring deeper to develop your own unique terrain. At 9.99 I think that this pack is well worth the cost, its value is definitely in the well built material that can allow you to manipulate it to any degree you need.

Some Pros to force your hand

  • Well annotated materials let you know where to change for your own terrain additions.
  • Blended well, the tiling is hidden and not so easy to notice from a distance (or up close)

Some cons to take away.

  • Not at the moment, it comes with what it offers, does it well and at a reasonable cost.
