My love affair with pixel art continues and will never end, I am utterly unrepentant.

It is just a fantastic journey from whenever pixel art was required because of hardware, the style disappearing and then rising again on stronger machines. The rise again is where the beauty begins, suddenly without the hard constraint of 16 bit graphics (or 8, or 32) artists can paint with all the strength of their nostalgia.

I wrote a more in depth love letter here for the game Beat Cop, with all of that firmly in our minds let’s jump into looking at this pack!

First thing is first, the price point on this pack is very solid. It is not free but at 4.99 for what you get, you are definitely getting your money’s worth.

The kit has a ton of assets that you can mix and match at your whim, this gives the pack a massive amount of staying power that lets you create a large variety of scenes.

The hierarchy is solid, there are a ton of assets though so it can feel a bit dense. The naming leaves a bit to be desired but the map assets can be deleted.

The style is pixel and the art leans towards a saturated stylized that feels almost surreal at points.

As with any 2D game, the depth is all in the framing and the layers.

The ground in the example scene is set up to have a bit more simulated depth, allowing for horizontal movement along the street. You very much would not need to do this in your own but it is a nice example to have, showing the different ways you can work with the pack.

The forest section of the map shows a more 2D setup where the the ground plane is flatter and the environment is pushed far into the distance.

Each asset is able to be manipulated and viewed in engine. You can adjust a lot of the different settings in here or export them to do color changes if that fits your fancy.

Definitely a solid pack, varied enough to have staying power and cheap enough to make it well worth your time.

Some Pros to force your hand

  • Cheap and Easy!
  • A lot of assets, a lot of potential variation

Some cons to take away.

  • The art may be more niche then expected
  • May be difficult to find what you need in the pack sometimes
