While many of us are still availing the great offers made for the 2013 launched version of the PS 4, Sony is busy trying to develop the next version of the console. While PS 5 is not expected for the next 3–4 years, it appears that the Sony will launch the newest version of PS 4.5 or PS 4K. It is speculated that the new version is being developed to support the PS VR (Virtual Reality) which is scheduled for launch later this year.

While there isn’t any official communication from PlayStation or Sony, which confirms the launch date, price or even the exact title of the console, the launch is heavily suspected of taking place this year itself. However, Kotaku had earlier published a post regarding the update on PS 4.5 based on information disclosed by a source. Needless to say that the console is supposed to have better and improved graphics, processor and support the 4K resolution in games. That is where the confusion in the name of the console arises from.

Another post made on Eurogamer suggests that the new version (PS 4.5 according to them) is a reality. They have even proposed why they feel the console is being developed and speculates that “while more GPU power is being offered to developers, realistically it is nowhere near enough to provide native 4K gaming at the same quality level as current 1080p titles.” They even suggest three strategies that might lead to the development of the new console; a) new, more powerful PS; b) Scaling up and enhancing the current PS; and c) slimmer, faster and refreshed PS4.

It is believed that at the GDC 2016, San Francisco Sony had floated the idea and had taken comments for the new and improved PS 4 from developers. They, however, did not disclose any more information on the console that they are planning and continue to keep the price and expected launch dates discrete.
