August 4th 2014, exactly 3 years ago, is the day Gamoloco’s database of Twitch viewership data was started.

Since then, we have gone through various adventures, during which we (almost) always managed to keep the data collection going. Our database is now one of the oldest and biggest in the live streaming space and it allows to understand live streaming and esports viewership trends much better than ever before.

Something peculiar with Twitch data through time is how little movement there’s ever been among top games. As you may know, League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, DOTA 2 and Hearthstone have been undisputed live streaming kings ever since we started looking at the data.

Even the biggest AAA titles out there have hardly been able to ever shake the rankings.

At some point, it even became a tad concerning: how come no new game could truly challenge the leaders?… Even Overwatch hasn’t really been able to compete.

Well for our 3rd birthday, I’m very happy to let you know about something you may already be aware of, especially if you’re a regular at our website or Twitter: Heres Comes A New Challenger!!

And it’s called PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. This game started trampling Gamoloco’s scoreboards even before it reached Steam’s Early Access last March, and since then it’s only been gaining speed.

The momentum pushing PUBG forward has grown so much it just earned it a spot in the very special club of games that have ever recorded 60M Hours Watched in 1 month. Before that, the club counted only 2 members: none other than League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

The spontaneous gaming tsunami that is PUBG reminds me heavily of early CS and DOTA days: all of a sudden, a game no one has been expecting, with almost no marketing, comes out of nowhere to grab the attention of millions of gamers... and considering the data, it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon.

Of course, you can be sure that we’ll be charting that and more throughout Gamoloco’s 4th year.
