Every day, we use resources with little thought of where they come from. Water, electricity, and food are some of the commodities that we enjoy. We don’t really appreciate the little things that make our everyday lives a little better.

What we use ultimately comes at a cost. With our development comes the grim price of our planet’s health. At any time, and at any given place, the Earth loses its resources to sustain our expensive lifestyles. And as we head into a future where the Earth is exhausted of all of its resources, we must remember that our planet is finite and that we share it with other living beings on Earth.

April 22nd is an important day for all of us. It is the day we remember the damage we have done to the Earth during our search for development. It is a day we commemorate the Earth, the life it holds, and its importance to all of us.

It is Earth Day.

Earth Day is the day that we raise awareness for the problems that plague our planet. It started simple, in the US, where a certain senator wanted to raise awareness to the youth of the global implications of automobile emissions and water pollution. Now, Earth day is globally celebrated by almost every country in the world. It is one of the most significant movements worldwide that advocate for the better treatment of the planet we live on.

On this day, many governments will convene to discuss the state of the environment and the various ways to address Earth’s problems. Many presidents will take charge and lead their nations to a greener tomorrow.

But as the youth, there are many ways that we can act too. We mustn’t remain idle and watch the government move without us. By taking part in the conversation happening, we can ignite change within ourselves and our fellow youths.

What can we exactly do?

What we can do doesn’t need to be significant. We can start by using eco-bags and cutting the waste we produce every day. By slowly cutting down our waste and becoming mindful of what we use, we can create a difference. It may start small, but it adds up little by little over time. No effort started big, but it is the little steps that we make that truly matter. What matters is that we begin now to create a change.

Another thing that we can do is start the conversation. By creating awareness within the youth and within our community. The discussion will begin with you. Educate yourself, inform others and make a consciousness that grows within your community. You may only be a single person on the Earth, but by initiating conversation and sparking an awareness within those around you, you have the power to ignite change. We are all catalysts for change.

Earth Day is a special day because it marks the day when we were given a voice to speak about the damages that we have caused. It started small, with a single professor inviting his students to talk about the environment’s state, and now it is a global movement celebrated on the 22nd day of April. Earth Day may be a single day on our calendars, but we must not forget that our battle for the environment continues every day. Spark conversation, make conscious decisions and be the catalyst for change that the Earth needs you to be.
