Korean developers are responsible for creating some of the most frightening games known to mankind. With Halloween coming up, we decided to compile a list of the most scariest horror games created in Korea. These games are mostly all mobile games and have enough understandable English for non-Korean speakers to play through.
White Day: A Labyrinth Named School
White Day is probably the most popular Korean horror game known to Western gamers. The game was actually first created in 2001, and many Koreans report playing the game when they were in high school, so the game actually had a lot of nostalgia going for it when the game was re-released as a mobile game in 2015.
The game is a first person survival game, and is a genuinely scary experience. Ingenious puzzles that get progressively harder and movie-like storyline and cut scenes make the game a must play. The game contains no combat but you must survive every scene with a heart-beat meter at the top and each dialogue has multiple choice responses which determine the ending and the story progression. If you haven’t played it yet, add this to your bucket list!
The Asylum
The Asylum is a top-down adventure RPG-like horror game created with Unity. As you wake up in an asylum, the purpose of the game is to find out why you are in the asylum and how to escape the place. The game only need 2 minutes to begin to make you tense and contains many intense scares and jump moments. Also, there are a number of other horror games by the same developer, created in the same style: Story of Dorocy, DeepSeaGirl.
House of Grudge
House of Grudge is a horror game from the same developers as Escape the Room. The gameplay is similar, where the player has solve puzzles and find a way out of each room or area. However, this time the backdrop is a haunted house littered with creepy moments and a few jump scares. There is a sanity meter at the top of the screen and an inventory screen. The game has a lot of atmosphere, with the tense music and creepy background sounds.
Noise: The School Shutdown
This game is a short, creepy game, where you have to explore a school and find the story. The puzzles and scenes are fairly unique and subtle, with virtually no jump scares. However, if you watch closely, every time you look back at a painting or window, something will change and creep you out. Definitely worth a playthrough!
Dim Light
Featured at the Busan Indie Connect Festival, Dim Light is a simple, yet effective horror game created for Android phones. Using a virtual controller, the purpose of the game is to survive the darkness and escape the house. As monsters come towards you , you have to stumble blindly through the darkness to get away.
Happy Halloween!
